Summary of profile:

I have worked as an architect in various roles for 30 years in the UK and Australia.

Whilst working on my Doctoral thesis, “Decarbonising Cities” in 2009, my focus changed to seeing the built environment through a sustainability lens, where I then went on to pursue this as my chosen speciality.

At FLATT, I manage the Sustainability team of Consultants and Engineers. I challenge design teams to find creative ways to reduce the carbon footprint of their proposals across a range of sectors, whilst focusing on the workplace and residential projects.

I see the Climate Crisis as the greatest challenge we have ever faced. This makes me passionate about doing everything possible within my professional role to ensure our buildings have as low an environmental impact as possible. This means designing buildings which are regenerative, follow circular economy principles and are net zero carbon wherever possible.

The decision to move from architecture to engineering provided me with the opportunity to have a greater influence in areas of design which, by their nature, have a significant impact on the environment. I am proud to be working with LETI and of the work I undertook as a member of the working group that authored the LETI Embodied Carbon Primer.

Outside of engineering

I’m a keen follower of my National Rugby Union team (Scotland) !
I also enjoy cycling and relaxing with my family.
